Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS)
New genetic abnormalities may be acquired during disease progression, and patients with progressive, relapsed, or drug-resistant disease should be reevaluated cytogenetically before starting new therapy.
Acute granulocytic leukemia (AML)
A deletion of the entire chromosome 7 or a deletion of the entire long arm 7q is a recurrent abnormality in MDS that occurs in approximately 5-10% of AML (M4 and M6), approximately 15% of adult MDS, 40% of pediatric MDS, and 50% of treatment-related AML/MDS; most deletions are in the q11-22 and q31-36 regions within 7q. Prognosis is poor.
Chromosome number and long and short arm detection
A deletion of the entire chromosome 7 or a deletion of the entire long arm 7q is a recurrent abnormality in MDS that occurs in approximately 5-10% of AML (M4 and M6), approximately 15% of adult MDS, 40% of pediatric MDS, and 50% of treatment-related AML/MDS; most deletions are in the q11-22 and q31-36 regions within 7q. Poor prognosis, often prone to infection and conversion to leukocytosis.
