Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is a group of extranodal B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma originating from mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue;
t(11; 18)(q21; q21) causes the fusion of apoptosis inhibitor-2 gene (API2 also known as BIRC3) on chromosome 11 and MALT1 gene on chromosome 18 to form the API2- MALT1 fusion gene, which is specific to MALT lymphoma chromosomal translocation. The generation of the translocation is associated with low-grade malignant gastric and lung MALT lymphomas.
